The two-wheeler sector is undergoing significant technological transformation due to increasing fuel prices, environmental concerns, advancements in battery technology, and the need for sustainable transportation. Electric two-wheelers are emerging as an alternative to conventional petrol-powered two-wheelers because of their lower operating emissions, reduced mechanical complexity, and potential for lower running costs. Conventional two-wheelers, however, continue to offer advantages such as longer riding range, rapid refuelling, established infrastructure, and widespread market availability. This review paper presents a comparative study of electric and conventional two-wheelers with reference to the manufacturing and automotive engineering perspective of Kinetic India Pvt. Ltd., Ahilyanagar. The study reviews the major differences in powertrain, energy source, performance, maintenance, environmental impact, operating cost, manufacturing requirements, and vehicle components. The paper also discusses the role of production, assembly, quality control, and technological development in the transition towards electric mobility. The review indicates that electric two-wheelers have considerable potential for urban transportation, while conventional two-wheelers continue to remain suitable where long-distance operation, quick refuelling, and established service infrastructure are important.
KEYWORDS
The comparative review shows that electric and conventional two-wheelers have different technological and operational advantages. Conventional two-wheelers have an established infrastructure, quick refuelling capability, mature technology, and excellent suitability for long-distance operation. Electric two-wheelers offer advantages in terms of energy efficiency, low noise, reduced mechanical complexity, and zero tailpipe emissions. From the manufacturing perspective, the growth of electric mobility represents both a challenge and an opportunity for organizations such as Kinetic India Pvt. Ltd., Ahilyanagar. Existing capabilities in mechanical manufacturing, machining, fabrication, assembly, and quality control can be integrated with emerging technologies such as battery systems, electric motors, power electronics, automation, and digital diagnostics. Therefore, electric two-wheelers are likely to become increasingly important, particularly for urban and short-to-medium-distance transportation. At the same time, conventional two-wheelers will continue to have relevance where charging infrastructure, range, and rapid refuelling remain critical factors.
