It is developed to form a rigorous and technically based assessment of cap-based (nozzle-cap type) igniters, with particular emphasis on their practical reliability in the initiation of high-energy systems such as solid rocket motors and explosive transfer chains. The reliable operation of such igniters can hardly be overestimated, because any deviation or failure of the initiation sequence can be further propagated into the overall malfunction of the entire system, leading to a failure in the mission or a serious safety hazard. The systematically studied coupled thermo-mechanical processes that control the transformation of an input stimulus, usually electrical or mechanical, into a controlled ignition event, to assure consistent flame propagation and the transfer of energy to the primary energetic material. The analysis confirms that a geometric configuration is a prevailing factor that affects the igniter performance.
KEYWORDS
Cap-base igniters are essential components of reliable initiation systems used in ammunition and defense applications. This review highlights the importance of igniter design, energetic material selection, combustion characteristics, and pressure generation in achieving consistent ignition performance. Recent developments in materials and simulation techniques have improved ignition reliability, safety, and efficiency. However, challenges such as sensitivity control, thermal stability, and performance under extreme conditions still require further research. Future studies should focus on advanced energetic materials and optimized igniter designs to enhance the reliability and safety of modern initiation systems.
