This paper introduces a computer numerical control (CNC) drafting system designed to deliver high precision at significantly reduced cost. Instead of relying on expensive proprietary components, the system employs a custom architecture that addresses common failure modes in low-cost open-loop designs through redundancy. Each linear axis is powered by four low-cost, gear-reduced 20BYJ-46 stepper motors operating in parallel. These motors drive two synchronized timing belt assemblies, with the moving elements directly coupled to the belts. The parallel belt configuration allows the torque from each motor to combine, producing a strong, balanced propulsive force. This distributed drive reduces step loss and prevents gantry deflection, ensuring accuracy and stability. Motor commands are issued simultaneously to all drivers via shared microcontroller control pins, guaranteeing synchronized actuation. To enhance reliability, a mechanical fault detection system is integrated: a roller limit switch is positioned against the belt surface. As the belt moves, the roller rotates; if the belt breaks, slips excessively, or a motor stalls, the roller stops, triggering the switch and signaling a failure. By combining distributed motor actuation with mechanical fault detection, the system achieves a robust, reliable, and highly accurate CNC drafting platform. Compared to commercial alternatives, this architecture can be built at a fraction of the cost, while maintaining superior performance. The synergy of the distributed drive system and mechanical motion sensor establishes a CNC plotter design that is both economical and dependable.
KEYWORDS
Our CNC plotter design proves that precision and affordability can coexist. By using a distributed multi-motor drive with synchronized 20BYJ‑46 stepper motors and parallel timing belts, we eliminated step loss and gantry racking. A simple belt slip sensor based on a roller lever switch provides failsafe protection without costly encoders. Built with Arduino, GRBL firmware, and modular aluminum framing, the system is DIY-friendly, reliable, and scalable. It empowers educators, hobbyists, and small enterprises to achieve professional-quality plotting at a fraction of the cost, bridging the gap between low-cost kits and high-end equipment.
