Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) encompasses the initiatives undertaken by businesses to conduct their operations ethically while contributing to social welfare and environmental sustainability. In India, CSR has assumed increased significance following its statutory enforcement under Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013, which mandates eligible companies to allocate a minimum of two percent of their average net profits toward CSR activities prescribed under Schedule VII. These activities include areas such as education, healthcare, environmental sustainability, rural development, and social welfare. This study analyzes CSR practices among selected BSE-listed insurance companies, with particular emphasis on CSR spending patterns and the nature of activities undertaken in accordance with Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013. Furthermore, the paper empirically examines the impact of CSR disclosure on the profitability performance of these companies. The study is based on secondary data collected from annual reports and CSR disclosures of selected BSE-listed insurance companies. A CSR Disclosure Index is constructed using CSR reporting practices and the extent of CSR activities undertaken as per Schedule VII, while profitability performance is measured using Return on Equity (ROE). Descriptive statistics and regression analysis are employed for data analysis. The findings indicate that CSR disclosure has a positive and significant impact on firm profitability, with older and socially responsible listed insurance companies exhibiting higher ROE.

Over the five-year period, the insurance sector exhibited strong CSR compliance, with the bulk of funding directed toward education and healthcare. Nonetheless, CSR spending remains uneven, with minimal allocation to areas such as technology incubation, slum development, and heritage. The analysis further indicates that CSR disclosure positively impacts firm profitability, with older and socially responsible firms achieving higher ROE. In contrast, larger firms tend to experience lower profitability, suggesting potential operational inefficiencies, while leverage appears to have no significant effect. These findings underscore the strategic importance of CSR and the moderating influence of firm age and size on financial performance.
