Human resource training and development play a vital role in building a knowledge-based workforce within manufacturing organizations in Malaysia. This study aims to explore the key challenges associated with the effective management of HR T&D practices in Malaysian manufacturing firms. To meet this objective, in-depth interviews were carried out with 58 human resource managers responsible for overseeing employee training and development, using a purposive (judgmental) sampling method. The findings identified three primary challenges affecting the successful management of HR T&D activities: the lack of skilled and competent human resource development professionals, difficulties in meeting the growing demand for knowledge workers, and challenges related to promoting continuous learning and development within the workplace. The study expects that these findings will enhance HR practitioners’ awareness and understanding of the major obstacles in managing training and development effectively, thereby supporting the formulation and implementation of suitable policies and procedures to improve HR T&D practices.
