Tax reforms are essential for promoting economic efficiency, enhancing revenue generation, and facilitating business growth. Before the introduction of GST, India's indirect tax structure consisted of various central and state taxes such as excise duty, service tax, value-added tax (VAT), central sales tax (CST), entry tax, and octroi. The coexistence of multiple taxes resulted in a fragmented market structure, increased compliance burdens, and inefficiencies in the movement of goods and services. To address these challenges, the Government of India implemented the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on 1 July 2017. GST introduced a destination-based taxation system that consolidated several indirect taxes into a single framework. The reform aimed to create a unified national market, simplify taxation, reduce business costs, and improve the overall competitiveness of Indian enterprises. This paper examines the impact of GST on market integration and competitiveness and evaluates whether the reform has achieved its intended objectives.
KEYWORDS
The Goods and Services Tax represents a landmark reform in India's taxation system. By eliminating interstate tax barriers, reducing logistics costs, and creating a unified national market, GST has significantly contributed to market integration. The reform has also enhanced business competitiveness through the reduction of tax cascading, simplification of compliance procedures, and encouragement of economic formalization. Although certain implementation challenges remain, the overall impact of GST on India's economic integration and competitiveness has been positive. Continued efforts to simplify procedures and address compliance issues will further strengthen the effectiveness of GST and support India's long-term economic growth.
