The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) plays a pivotal role in regulating the banking system through monetary, credit, and prudential policies that influence the performance of private sector banks. This study analyses the impact of RBI policies on HDFC Bank and Axis Bank by examining key policy instruments such as the repo rate, Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR), Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR), priority sector lending norms, and digital banking regulations. Using both primary and secondary data, the study evaluates their influence on lending activities, liquidity management, profitability, customer service, and operational efficiency. The findings indicate that effective implementation of RBI policies strengthens financial stability, promotes responsible banking practices, and supports sustainable growth in the private banking sector.
KEYWORDS
The study concludes that RBI policies constitute the foundation of a stable, efficient, and well-regulated banking system in India. Monetary policy instruments, regulatory guidelines, and prudential norms significantly influence lending activities, liquidity management, profitability, customer service, and risk management in private sector banks. HDFC Bank and Axis Bank have successfully adapted to these regulatory changes by strengthening governance, embracing digital transformation, and maintaining sound operational practices. The evidence gathered from the study indicates that effective implementation of RBI policies not only enhances financial discipline but also promotes customer confidence, operational resilience, and sustainable banking growth. Continued coordination between the RBI and private sector banks will remain essential for maintaining financial stability and supporting India's long-term economic development.
