The Indian economy has witnessed a significant shift from traditional cash-based transactions to digital payment systems. Technological advancements, increasing smartphone penetration, internet accessibility, and government initiatives have accelerated the adoption of digital payment methods. Digital payments refer to financial transactions conducted electronically without physical cash. These transactions can be performed using internet banking, mobile banking, debit cards, credit cards, mobile wallets, QR codes, and Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The Government of India has actively promoted digital payments through initiatives such as Digital India, Jan Dhan Yojana, Aadhaar-enabled payment systems, and demonetization. These efforts have encouraged citizens to embrace digital transactions and contribute towards a less-cash economy. UPI has emerged as one of the most successful innovations in India's digital payment ecosystem. Its simplicity, speed, and interoperability have transformed the way individuals and businesses conduct financial transactions.

The present study examined the role of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in transforming digital payments in India. The findings indicate that UPI has emerged as one of the most successful digital payment innovations in the country. UPI has significantly changed consumer payment behaviour by offering a convenient, secure, and efficient platform for conducting financial transactions. The ease of use, instant fund transfer capability, interoperability, and round-the-clock availability have contributed to its widespread acceptance among consumers and merchants. The study revealed that customer satisfaction with UPI services is generally high. Most users prefer UPI because it reduces transaction time, eliminates the need for cash, and simplifies financial transactions. The adoption of UPI has also contributed significantly to financial inclusion by providing access to digital payment services for a large segment of the population. Furthermore, UPI has played a crucial role in supporting the Government of India's vision of a cashless economy. The substantial increase in digital transactions demonstrates the growing trust and acceptance of digital payment systems among Indian consumers. Although challenges such as cybersecurity concerns, transaction failures, and internet dependency remain, the overall impact of UPI on India's payment ecosystem has been overwhelmingly positive. Therefore, it can be concluded that UPI has successfully transformed digital payments in India and will continue to play a vital role in shaping the future of the country's digital economy.
