NURSING
Jagannath Gupta Institute of Nursing Sciences
The present study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme on knowledge and expressed practice regarding prevention of nosocomial infection among B.Sc. nursing 1st year students. The objectives of the study were to assess the prior knowledge & expressed practice regarding nosocomial infection, to assess effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge and expressed practice regarding nosocomial infection, to associate the pretest knowledge & practice score with selected demographic variables & to determine the correlation between the knowledge and expressed practice score. Pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design was used for this study. The main study was carried out at Jagannath Gupta Institute of Nursing Sciences, Kolkata. The sample comprised of 50 students who met the inclusion criteria from the JINS were chosen by random sampling technique. Formal written permission was obtained from the authority to conduct the study. Pretest was conducted using a structured questionnaire & practice checklist. Self-Instructional Modules were given to the samples on that day. Post-test was conducted on 7th day after the pre-test by using the same tools. The data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Z test was used to find the effectiveness of STP and Chi square test was used to find the association of pre-test score with selected demographic variables & Karl Person correlation test was used to find correlation between knowledge and expressed practice score. The comparison was between post-test knowledge score with pretest knowledge score. The post-test mean score was 23.12 with SD 2.511 and the pretest mean score was 16.4 with SD 2.569. The post-test mean expressed practice score was found higher 69.26(92.34%) and SD of 4.009 when compared with pre-test mean knowledge score which was 60.66(80.88%) with SD of 4.752. The calculated "Z" value = 13.28 (knowledge) & 9.88 (expressed practice) was found to be statistically significant at (p<0.05 level.) This clearly indicates that after the implementation of Structured Teaching Programme on knowledge and practice regarding Nosocomial Infection prevention among B.Sc. Nursing 1st year students was significantly increased. Thus, the Structured Teaching Programme was found to be effective in improving knowledge among nursing students. Correlation between the knowledge score and expressed practice of students regarding nosocomial infection and the result (r value= 0.201) suggests that there is a moderate positive correlation between the both.
KEYWORDS
The main aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching program on knowledge and practice regarding prevention of nosocomial infection. The following conclusion was drawn based on the findings of the study: Mean percentage of knowledge score in the pre-test was 54.7% with mean and SD of 2.569, which has increased after administration of structured teaching program among BSc nursing 1st year students with mean percentage of knowledge score in the post-test by 77.1% with mean and SD of 2.511. The structured teaching program tested in the study was found to be effective (z=13.28, p<0.05) in improving the effectiveness structured teaching program on knowledge and practice regarding prevention of nosocomial infection among BSc nursing 1st year students. Association of demographic variables with pre-test score was computed using chi square test. Analysis has shown that there is no association between pre-test knowledge score with selected demographic variables. Correlation is determined by using Kral Pearson’s correlation which showed moderate negative correlation between both. Thus, the finding indicates that the knowledge of the BSc nursing 1st year students is increased knowledge regarding prevention of nosocomial infection through structured teaching program.
