Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) constitute the core structural and inter-connective backbone of modern electronic systems. This review paper examines mechanical panel processing—specifically Computer Numerical Control (CNC) routing—within PCB fabrication workflows, drawing on industrial practices and defect data associated with Epitome Components Private Limited (Ahmednagar, Maharashtra). The study synthesizes operational methodologies across single-sided, double-sided, and High-Frequency/RF PCB fabrications. Critical processing parameters—including spindle velocity, feed rates, tool deflection, and datum registration—are analyzed alongside common mechanical failure modes such as routing shifts, slot dimension variances, and edge burring. Standardized quality control frameworks, Pokayoke (mistake-proofing) jigs, and preventive maintenance regimes are evaluated to establish actionable protocols for optimizing dimensional accuracy and yield.
KEYWORDS
A. Key Findings ● CNC routing accuracy depends on the interlocked control of machine parameters, tooling condition, program versioning, and panel registration. ● Intermittent routing defects like missing slots or edge burring are preventable through automated tool-breakage detection and standardized preventive maintenance. ● Structured first-piece approval procedures prevent recurring systemic errors across high-volume panel runs. B. Technical Recommendations 1. Integrate automatic tool-breakage detection sensors across all high-speed CNC routing heads. 2. Implement standardized setup checklists requiring dual sign-offs (Operator + QA Lead) before batch execution. 3. Apply mistake-proofing (Poka-Yoke) physical pin sensors to downstream inspection fixtures. 4. Transition from reactive tool replacement to predictive tool-life tracking based on cut distance.
