Urban transportation demand in metropolitan areas is increasing rapidly due to growth in population, urbanization, and changes in travel behaviour, leading to more complex activity and travel patterns. Activity-based modelling provides an effective framework for analysing such behaviour at a fully disaggregate level for individuals and households. In the present study, Surat, a rapidly growing metropolitan city in India, has been selected as the study area. Data collection includes socio-economic characteristics, personal attributes, and detailed activity-travel information of individuals. The study examines the behavioural characteristics associated with the selection of specific activity patterns. Multinomial Logit (MNL) and Nested Logit models have been developed for different categories of travellers, namely workers, school-goers, and housewives. The MNL model has been applied to analyse trip chaining behaviour and indicates that the activity patterns behave as direct substitutes of one another. Further, a Nested Logit model has been developed for workers to better represent hierarchical activity-tour choices, and the model has been estimated using significant influencing variables.
KEYWORDS
· Individuals residing in metropolitan cities exhibit complex daily tour patterns involving multiple activities within a single trip chain. · The selection of activity-tour patterns is significantly influenced by socio-demographic characteristics at both individual and household levels, along with the allocation of activity time throughout the day. · Individuals tend to optimize the limited time available during a day; therefore, activity pattern selection is strongly affected by time budgeting and the duration allocated to various activities. · The Multinomial Logit model effectively captures the activity-tour choice behaviour of different categories of travellers, namely workers, school-going persons, and housewives, whereas the Nested Logit model provides a better representation of the activity-tour behaviour of workers.
