Abstract

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) networks form the backbone of enterprise and carrier-grade wide-area networks globally, yet their path selection mechanisms remain largely static, relying on pre-configured Label Switched Paths (LSPs) that cannot adapt to real-time traffic conditions. This paper proposes and evaluates an AI-driven traffic optimization framework that dynamically selects the optimal LSP using a real-time weighted composite scoring function incorporating latency, packet loss, and available bandwidth. The system is implemented entirely in Python and validated on a GNS3-emulated MPLS topology comprising two Label Edge Routers (LERs), two Label Switching Routers (LSRs), and two candidate paths. A Flask-based web dashboard provides live visualization of network metrics and path decisions. Experimental evaluation across three traffic scenarios demonstrates up to 34% reduction in average latency, 50% reduction in packet loss, and 27% improvement in bandwidth utilization compared to static MPLS path selection. A hysteresis mechanism prevents path flapping under near-equal conditions. The proposed approach requires no prior training, no SDN controller infrastructure, and can be deployed as a lightweight overlay on existing MPLS networks, making it practically deployable in production environments.

Full Article/Conclusion

This paper presented an AI-driven traffic optimization framework for MPLS networks, implemented and validated in a GNS3 simulation environment. The proposed system employs a real-time weighted composite scoring function to dynamically select the optimal Label Switched Path based on live measurements of latency, packet loss, and available bandwidth. A Flask-based web dashboard provides continuous visibility into network performance across both candidate paths. Experimental evaluation across three traffic scenarios demonstrated significant improvements over static MPLS path selection: up to 34% reduction in average latency, up to 50% reduction in packet loss, and 27% improvement in bandwidth utilization. The system's low deployment complexity - requiring no SDN controller, no training data, and no specialized hardware - distinguishes it from prior RL-based approaches and makes it practically deployable in production enterprise MPLS networks.
