Computer-Aided Design (CAD) has become an essential component of modern civil engineering practice, significantly transforming the way engineering drawings, designs, construction plans, and technical documentation are prepared and managed. Among the various CAD software packages available, AutoCAD is one of the most widely used tools in the civil engineering profession because of its flexibility, accuracy, drafting capabilities, and compatibility with different engineering workflows. The application of AutoCAD extends across several areas of civil engineering, including architectural planning, structural detailing, surveying, transportation engineering, water resources engineering, construction planning, and infrastructure development. This research paper examines the application, significance, advantages, limitations, and future potential of AutoCAD in civil engineering. The study focuses on how AutoCAD assists civil engineers in preparing precise two-dimensional drawings, developing layouts, modifying designs, generating construction details, and producing standardized technical documentation. It also examines its application in the preparation of site plans, building plans, elevations, sections, road alignments, drainage layouts, structural drawings, reinforcement details, surveying drawings, and other engineering documentation. The software enables engineers to create accurate geometric representations and make rapid modifications without the need to recreate complete drawings, thereby improving productivity and reducing drafting errors.
KEYWORDS
AutoCAD has become an essential part of modern civil engineering. It provides engineers with an efficient platform for designing, drafting, editing, and presenting construction projects with high accuracy. It is widely used for preparing building plans, structural drawings, road layouts, surveying plans, drainage systems, and 3D models. One of the major advantages of AutoCAD is that it reduces the time and effort required for manual drafting. Engineers can easily make corrections, modify designs, add dimensions, and maintain proper standards. It also improves the clarity and accuracy of drawings, which helps architects, engineers, contractors, and clients understand the project properly. AutoCAD supports both 2D drafting and 3D modelling, making it useful during different stages of a construction project. It helps in better visualization, planning, estimation, and documentation. The software also allows drawings to be stored digitally, copied, shared, and modified whenever required.
