Augmented Reality (AR) is a rapidly evolving technology in the realm of education, especially in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This research explores the development and assessment of an AR learning system that seeks to improve learning outcomes, engagement and skills development. The main goal is to investigate the potential of AR to enhance understanding by blending virtual 3D objects with the physical environment to create an immersive and interactive learning environment. The study uses a mixed method approach, integrating quantitative and qualitative methods to evaluate the system. Students were grouped into control and treatment groups to assess the impact of conventional versus AR approaches. Methods included pre-tests, post-tests, surveys and observations. The results show a clear improvement in learning outcomes, motivation and engagement with students who have used the AR system. The immersive nature of AR, including elements like real-time simulations and object manipulation, allowed students to comprehend abstract STEM concepts and gain a deeper understanding of how theory can be applied to real-world scenarios. Moreover, the research suggests the use of AR in promoting critical thinking, problem-solving and experiential learning. However, there were some challenges including technical issues, compatibility with devices and teacher training. But these can be addressed with careful planning and support. Overall, AR-based learning platforms hold the potential to revolutionize STEM education by providing an interactive, engaging, and effective learning experience. The research recommends future work to explore combining AR with emerging technologies and extending its usage in various educational contexts for optimal results.
KEYWORDS
The research on an Augmented Reality (AR)–supported learning platform for STEM education shows that the use of modern technologies in education has a positive impact on learning outcomes and student engagement. The results show that AR offers an interactive and immersive environment that enhances the understanding of abstract STEM concepts. Through the use of 3D models and simulations, students can visualise abstract concepts, making it easier to connect theory to practice. This translates into better learning outcomes, retention and comprehension. Moreover, the research underscores the crucial role of student motivation and engagement in learning. The AR platform approach enhances traditional teaching approaches by making the learning process more engaging and interactive, promoting active learning. This enhances student engagement in the learning process and potentially improves their interest in STEM education. Furthermore, the platform facilitates the acquisition of key skills like critical thinking, problem-solving and analytical skills, which are vital for both personal and professional success. However, the research also highlights some challenges associated with the use of AR technology in education. Compatibility issues, infrastructural demands and teacher training can hinder the use of AR. But with ongoing technological developments and institutional backing, these issues can be overcome. The integration of AR with effective teaching strategies is crucial to optimise its use and create a smooth learning experience.
