Road surface defects such as potholes and humps are major contributors to vehicle damage, traffic inconvenience, and road accidents. Conventional identification of such defects generally depends on manual inspection and periodic road maintenance, which can be time-consuming and inefficient. This paper presents an IoT-based system for automatic detection and notification of potholes and road humps. An ultrasonic sensor is used to detect potholes and estimate the variation in road surface distance, while an RF transmitter-receiver arrangement is employed to identify road humps. An Arduino microcontroller processes the sensor information and provides warnings through an LCD and buzzer. GPS is incorporated to determine the location of detected potholes, while Wi-Fi connectivity transfers the sensed information to the cloud. The collected information can be monitored remotely through the Blynk IoT platform using an Android smartphone. The proposed system integrates sensing, location identification, wireless communication, and cloud-based monitoring to provide timely road-condition information and assist both drivers and road-maintenance authorities. The system described in the report demonstrates a feasible low-cost approach for automated road-condition monitoring.
KEYWORDS
This paper presented an IoT-based automatic notification and detection system for potholes and road humps using ultrasonic and RF sensing technologies. The proposed system integrates Arduino, ultrasonic sensors, RF transmitter and receiver modules, GPS, Wi-Fi, LCD, buzzer, Android smartphone, and Blynk cloud services. Ultrasonic sensing is used to detect potholes by measuring road-surface distance variations, whereas RF communication is employed to provide advance notification of road humps. GPS and IoT connectivity further support location-based information and remote monitoring. The developed architecture provides a practical embedded and IoT-oriented approach for improving driver awareness of road defects. The system can assist in identifying hazardous road conditions and sharing the information with users through a cloud-connected application. Future enhancement can focus on improving detection accuracy, reducing dependence on Internet connectivity, strengthening IoT security, and incorporating more advanced sensing or data-processing techniques. These directions follow the limitations identified in the source report concerning GPS reliability, connectivity, encryption, authentication, and IoT security.
