The banking and financial sector has experienced rapid digital transformation, leading to an increasing demand for intelligent systems capable of making fast, accurate, and transparent loan approval decisions. Traditional loan evaluation methods rely heavily on manual verification and predefined rules, making the process time-consuming, inconsistent, and vulnerable to human error. Moreover, the increasing number of fraudulent loan applications has highlighted the need for automated systems that can identify high-risk applicants while maintaining fairness and efficiency in decision-making. This research proposes a machine learning-based Bank Loan Approval Prediction System integrated with Fraud Detection and Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). The proposed system predicts whether a loan application should be approved or rejected based on important applicant attributes such as age, annual income, employment experience, credit score, loan amount, debt-to-income ratio, existing EMIs, marital status, property value, loan tenure, and loan purpose. A balanced dataset containing 50,000 loan records was preprocessed and used to train multiple supervised machine learning algorithms including Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbors, Naïve Bayes, AdaBoost, Gradient Boosting, and XGBoost. The performance of all models was evaluated using Accuracy, Precision, Recall, F1-Score, ROC-AUC Score, Cross-Validation Accuracy, Confusion Matrix, Training Time, and Prediction Time. Experimental evaluation demonstrated that the Decision Tree classifier achieved the highest overall performance with a testing accuracy of 97.98%, making it the most suitable model for deployment. To improve transparency and practical usability, the trained model was integrated into a Flask-based web application that enables real-time loan approval prediction through a graphical user interface. The application also incorporates Explainable Artificial Intelligence techniques to identify the most influential features affecting each prediction, thereby increasing user trust and supporting financial decision-making. The developed system provides a reliable, efficient, and interpretable solution for intelligent loan approval prediction and fraud risk assessment in modern banking environments.
KEYWORDS
This research presented a machine learning-based approach for predicting bank loan approval using applicant financial and personal information. The proposed system utilized multiple input attributes, including age, annual income, employment experience, credit score, debt-to-income ratio, existing EMIs, loan amount, property value, loan tenure, marital status, and loan purpose, to classify loan applications into approved and rejected categories. Nine supervised machine learning algorithms, namely Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbors, Naïve Bayes, AdaBoost, Gradient Boosting, and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), were implemented and comparatively evaluated using the same dataset and preprocessing strategy. The experimental evaluation demonstrated that the Decision Tree classifier achieved the best overall prediction performance with a testing accuracy of 97.98%, together with excellent precision, recall, F1-score, ROC-AUC score, and computational efficiency. Based on this comparative analysis, the Decision Tree classifier was selected as the final prediction model and successfully deployed through a Flask-based web application. The developed application enables real-time loan approval prediction while incorporating fraud detection and Explainable Artificial Intelligence to improve transparency and user confidence. The combination of machine learning, explainability, and web deployment provides an efficient, reliable, and practical solution for intelligent loan approval prediction in modern banking environments. The proposed system can assist financial institutions in improving decision accuracy, reducing processing time, and minimizing the risks associated with manual loan evaluation.
