Brushless DC (BLDC) motors are rapidly replacing conventional brushed DC motors across various industrial and consumer applications due to their superior torque-to-weight ratio, high efficiency, and operational reliability. This report provides a comprehensive review of BLDC motor technology, detailing its fundamental operating principles, inverter-driven electronic commutation techniques, and system dynamics. Key research focuses include the implementation of sensorless control strategies to minimize hardware cost and complexity, alongside the optimization of speed control utilizing Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) and Field-Oriented Control (FOC) algorithms. Furthermore, this work evaluates the resulting efficiency gains and presents a detailed, simulation-based performance analysis conducted within the MATLAB/Simulink environment.
KEYWORDS
This report has provided a thorough investigation into Brushless DC (BLDC) motor technology, evaluating its core design principles, control methodologies, and its pivotal role in advancing modern automation and robotics systems. By replacing mechanical brushes with an inverter-driven electronic commutation bridge, BLDC motors effectively overcome the physical limitations of friction, thermal constraints, and wear that plague traditional brushed DC actuators. This makes them highly dependable, efficient components capable of meeting rigorous industrial demands.
