Fast and efficient energy transfer is critical for modern Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption. This paper presents a rigorous modeling, design, and simulation-based evaluation of an Electric Vehicle On-Board Charger (OBC) governed by a tuned Proportional-Integral (PI) closed-loop control scheme. The OBC system integrates a AC-DC Power Factor Correction (PFC) boost converter stage with an isolated DC-DC converter topology to interface a standard 230 V, 50 Hz AC grid with a high-voltage Lithium-ion traction battery pack (nominal 350 V – 420 V). A cascade PI controller architecture regulates the inner inductor current loop and outer DC-link/battery voltage loop, achieving precise constant-current (CC) and constant-voltage (CV) charging profiles. MATLAB/Simulink simulation results demonstrate high efficiency (>95.4%), low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD < 3.2%), rapid transient recovery (<12 ms), and near-unity power factor (PF > 0.992) under varied load and grid fluctuation conditions.
KEYWORDS
This paper presented a complete modeling, control design, and simulation study of a 3.3 kW dual-stage On-Board Charger (OBC) for electric vehicles. The proposed PI-controlled PFC boost converter and isolated DC-DC converter configuration achieves high efficiency (95.4%), excellent power quality (PF 0.994, THD 2.85%), and smooth CC-CV battery charging transition. The continuous closed-loop feedback guarantees fast dynamic suppression of grid disturbance and voltage overshoot. Future research will explore adaptive fuzzy-PI hybrid tuning and SiC semiconductor physical prototype validation.
