The rapid adoption of cloud computing has fundamentally transformed the way organizations store, process, and manage data. Amazon Web Services (AWS), as the world's most widely deployed cloud platform, offers a rich ecosystem of services that enable scalability, flexibility, and cost efficiency. However, migrating to the cloud also introduces a complex landscape of security challenges that must be carefully addressed. This paper investigates the major security threats inherent in cloud environments—including unauthorized access, data breaches, misconfiguration of cloud resources, insecure APIs, and compliance violations—with a specific focus on the AWS platform. Through a systematic analysis of existing literature and AWS-native security tools, this study proposes a layered, defense-in-depth security architecture that leverages services such as AWS IAM, Amazon VPC, AWS Shield, AWS CloudTrail, and AWS Security Hub. The proposed framework integrates proactive threat detection, identity governance, network segmentation, and continuous compliance monitoring. Observations drawn from documented industry case studies and AWS security incidents support the practical applicability of the recommended strategies. The findings indicate that a well-architected, multi-layered security posture significantly reduces an organization's attack surface and strengthens its resilience against both external and insider threats. This paper aims to serve as a practical reference for students, researchers, and cloud practitioners seeking to design secure AWS-based systems.
KEYWORDS
This paper has presented a structured investigation of cloud security challenges within the AWS environment and proposed a practical, multi-layered security architecture to address them. Beginning with an analysis of the AWS ecosystem and the shared responsibility model, the study identified eight principal security challenges: misconfiguration, IAM vulnerabilities, insecure APIs, data breaches, DDoS attacks, compliance deficits, insider threats, and multi-tenancy risks. Through a systematic review of AWS-native security services and established best practices, the paper demonstrated that effective cloud security is achievable through the disciplined application of identity governance, network segmentation, data encryption, continuous monitoring, and automated compliance enforcement. The proposed five-layer architecture—spanning identity, network, data, detection, and governance—operationalizes these principles into a coherent, implementable framework. A central finding of this research is that the majority of cloud security failures are not the result of sophisticated, externally orchestrated attacks on AWS infrastructure, but rather stem from preventable misconfigurations and access control weaknesses on the customer side. This reinforces the critical importance of security education, the enforcement of organizational security baselines through automation, and the development of a security-aware culture among cloud practitioners. As organizations continue to expand their cloud footprints and as adversaries continue to develop cloud-aware attack techniques, the importance of rigorous, proactive cloud security architecture will only grow. The present work contributes to this objective by offering a structured, practically grounded framework that students, researchers, and practitioners can adapt and deploy in real-world AWS environments. Future work should extend this framework to address emerging challenges in serverless security, AI-driven threat detection, and post-quantum cryptography.
