- In today’s world what we see is the growth of distributed teams in software development which report to very efficient collaboration tools. In the past it was noted that traditional development settings did not have real time collaboration which in turn made developers to rely on external communication tools and version control systems. We introduce Codeo in this paper which is a next generation collaborative development environment that brings together multiple developers to write, edit and execute code at the same time within a web based platform. The system includes real time code sync via WebSockets, multi language code execution through remote compile services, in platform chat and AI which puts out code suggestions. Proposed architecture was designed using what is now a standard set of web technologies which include React, Node.js, TypeScript, and Socket.io which in turn enable low latency collaboration and efficient data sync. We have implemented room based access control in Codeo which in turn supports collaborative coding sessions and we also put in features like shared editing, file management, and real time messaging for developers. We did an experimental evaluation which we report to show that the system does very well in terms of providing a smooth collaboration experience with minimal latency which at the same time reports high in terms of sync accuracy.. This is meant to increase efficiency within distributed development groups, academic programming contexts, and remote software engineering processes by creating a seamless collaboration environment for coding which can be accessed directly from a web browser.
KEYWORDS
This paper introduces Codeo, our new web based collaborative development environment which we put forth for use by geographically diverse development teams that require real time programming collaboration. In today’s software development which is very much a team effort, we see a great need for tools that enable smooth interaction between developers, idea exchange and simultaneous code editing which at the same time do away with the use of many external platforms. We have put together a system which we present which does exactly that it includes real time collaborative code editting, support for multiple languages, in platform communication and AI which assist in the coding process. Also we have architected the system using present day web technologies which include React, Node.js, TypeScrypt and WebSocket for communication which in turn we have used to achieve better sync and very low latency collaboration. Experimental research of the platform reports that we see the system do an excellent job at supporting live code editing, real time code update sync, in the moment developer chat, and also which you press a button and your code runs in the browser. Also we see that we have improved the developer experience with the addition of an AI which gives out great code tips and programming help. What we found is that Codeo does a great job at improving collaboration which in turn improves remote software development, we see it in play in remote programming education and in collaborative coding. By putting many development tools in one place the platform we have made the collaborative programming process simpler and in doing so we see large increases in productivity for today’s development teams.
