Abstract

This study investigates the role of budgeting in improving the financial performance of small businesses. The primary data are represented by the illustrative survey of 150 small business owners and managers. The study is on budgeting practices, cash-flow planning, cost control, variance monitoring and perceived financial performance. The percentage analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis are used in the same general way as in the given model paper. The illustrative results reveal that the effectiveness of budgeting is positively related to financial performance. Those who said they regularly budgeted, tracked cash flow and compared actual to planned results, said they had more control over costs and liquidity. The study concludes that budgeting is a useful tool of management for small firms, if it is realistic, regularly reviewed and ed to operational decisions.

Full Article/Conclusion

Budgeting provides small businesses with a formal means of planning, controlling expenditure, managing cash flows and evaluating financial performance. The illustrative primary-data analysis suggests a positive relationship between budgeting effectiveness and perceived financial performance. The findings should not be taken as evidence from a real field survey until illustrative observations are replaced by real respondent data. However, the analysis shows how primary survey evidence can be organized and statistically assessed. Effective budgeting is most useful when it is realistic, regularly reviewed and  ed to day-to-day managerial decisions.
