Beams and columns are primary structural members of reinforced concrete (RCC) buildings. Columns transfer loads from beams, slabs and upper floors safely to the foundation, while beams transfer slab and wall loads to columns. Proper setting out, reinforcement placement, formwork, concreting, vibration and curing are essential for structural safety and serviceability. This study presents a step-by-step construction procedure for placing RCC columns and beams in a residential building, including site preparation, center-line marking, reinforcement details, shuttering, concrete placement, quality control, curing, inspection and common construction precautions. Member sizes, reinforcement details and concrete grades must be finalized from the structural design and applicable standards; the points below are general construction guidance and not a substitute for a structural engineer's drawings.
KEYWORDS
Beams and columns are essential components of an RCC framed building and must be constructed with accurate setting out, reinforcement detailing, formwork, concreting, compaction and curing. A disciplined sequence of inspection before, during and after concreting helps reduce construction defects. The most important principle is to follow the approved structural drawings and specifications; dimensions and reinforcement must not be changed at site without authorization from the responsible structural professional.
