The rapid digital transformation of businesses, governments, and societies has significantly increased dependence on modern information systems. While technological advancements such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics, and remote connectivity have improved operational efficiency and innovation, they have simultaneously expanded the cybersecurity threat landscape. Modern information systems are increasingly vulnerable to sophisticated cyberattacks including ransomware, phishing, insider threats, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, malware, supply chain compromises, and AI-driven cyber threats. This research paper critically examines the major cybersecurity challenges affecting contemporary information systems and evaluates emerging defense mechanisms, frameworks, and strategies for mitigating cyber risks. The study explores the evolution of cyber threats, vulnerabilities associated with digital transformation, and the role of human factors in cybersecurity incidents. Furthermore, the paper discusses the impact of cloud computing, IoT devices, artificial intelligence, and remote work environments on cybersecurity resilience. The research also highlights the importance of regulatory compliance, cybersecurity governance, zero-trust architecture, and security awareness programs in strengthening organizational defenses. By analyzing current trends, case studies, and scholarly literature, the paper identifies key gaps in cybersecurity preparedness and proposes strategic recommendations for organizations to improve cyber resilience in an increasingly interconnected digital ecosystem.
KEYWORDS
Cybersecurity challenges in modern information systems continue to evolve alongside technological innovation. The increasing complexity of digital infrastructures, combined with the rapid adoption of cloud computing, IoT devices, artificial intelligence, and remote work technologies, has significantly expanded the cybersecurity threat landscape. Modern organizations face persistent risks from ransomware, phishing, insider threats, software vulnerabilities, identity-based attacks, and AI-driven cybercrime. Traditional perimeter-based security models are no longer sufficient to address sophisticated and adaptive cyber threats. Effective cybersecurity requires a multi-layered approach that integrates advanced technologies, zero trust architectures, regulatory compliance, employee awareness, and proactive risk management. Artificial intelligence and machine learning offer promising opportunities for enhancing cybersecurity resilience, although they also introduce new attack vectors. As cyber threats continue to evolve, organizations must prioritize cybersecurity as a strategic business function rather than merely a technical issue. Future cybersecurity success will depend on continuous innovation, skilled workforce development, collaborative threat intelligence sharing, and adaptive security governance.
