Social media platforms have become an integral part of modern communication, enabling users to share information, opinions, and personal content at an unprecedented scale. However, the extensive collection, storage, and processing of user data have raised serious concerns regarding data privacy and security [2]. Social media platforms frequently handle sensitive personal information, making them attractive targets for cyberattacks, data breaches, unauthorized data sharing, and privacy violations [1]. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the major data privacy and security challenges faced by social media platforms. It examines how user data is collected and utilized, identifies common privacy risks and security threats, and analyzes existing protection mechanisms adopted by social media service providers. In addition, the paper reviews relevant literature to highlight current research trends and discusses real-world incidents that demonstrate the impact of inadequate data protection. Key challenges such as user awareness, policy enforcement, scalability, and the balance between usability and privacy are also addressed [2]. Finally, the study outlines future directions and potential solutions to enhance data privacy and security in social media environments.
KEYWORDS
This paper presented a comprehensive analysis of data privacy and security challenges in social media platforms. It examined data handling practices, usage growth, data breaches, and user behavior. While existing protection mechanisms provide some level of security, significant challenges remain. Strengthening privacy frameworks, improving user awareness, and adopting advanced security technologies are essential for building safer and more trustworthy social media platforms.[ This study examined data privacy and security challenges in social media platforms. Prior research highlights significant risks related to excessive data collection, user behavior, and evolving cyber threats [1][2][4]. Strengthening privacy frameworks and improving awareness are essential steps toward safer social media ecosystems.
