The Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter (UART) is one of the most widely used serial communication protocols in embedded systems, microcontrollers, and digital communication applications. This project focuses on the design and implementation of a UART interface using Verilog Hardware Description Language (HDL). The primary objective is to develop a reliable and efficient UART module capable of transmitting and receiving serial data asynchronously without the need for a shared clock between communicating devices. This project demonstrates the practical application of digital design concepts, finite state machines, and serial communication protocols. The implemented UART interface provides a cost-effective and efficient solution for data exchange in modern digital systems. The successful realization of the UART using Verilog highlights the advantages of HDL-based design methodologies in achieving reliable, high-performance communication interfaces for FPGA and ASIC applications.
KEYWORDS
The design and implementation of a UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter) interface using Verilog HDL successfully demonstrate the principles of asynchronous serial communication in digital systems. The project incorporates essential modules such as the UART transmitter, UART receiver, and baud rate generator to enable reliable data transmission and reception. Through Verilog-based modeling and simulation, the functionality of the UART protocol is verified, ensuring accurate and efficient communication between digital devices. The modular design approach enhances flexibility, scalability, and ease of integration with FPGA and embedded platforms. Furthermore, this project provides practical knowledge of hardware description languages, finite state machines, timing control, and communication protocols. The implemented UART interface serves as a cost-effective and dependable solution for serial communication in various applications, including embedded systems, industrial automation, IoT devices, and computer peripherals.
