In the present era of rapid urbanization and increasing environmental concerns, the concept of zero-waste design has emerged as an important approach in the field of interior design. Modern interiors, while focusing on aesthetics and functionality, often contribute significantly to waste generation through construction activities, material usage, frequent renovations, and disposal of short-life products. This growing problem raises a critical question—whether designing zero-waste interiors is practically achievable or merely an ideal concept. This research study aims to explore the feasibility of zero-waste interior design and examine its potential as a future reality. It focuses on understanding the sources of waste generated in interior spaces and evaluates how design strategies can help in minimizing or eliminating this waste. The study highlights the importance of adopting sustainable practices such as the use of recycled, reusable, and biodegradable materials, along with design approaches like minimalism, modular systems, and adaptive reuse of furniture and materials. In addition, the research discusses the role of circular design principles, where materials are kept in use for as long as possible, reducing the need for new resources and lowering environmental impact. It also emphasizes the importance of durability, flexibility, and responsible consumption in creating interiors that generate less waste over time. However, the study also identifies several challenges in achieving zero-waste interiors, including higher initial costs, limited availability of sustainable materials, lack of awareness among users and designers, and practical difficulties in waste management and recycling processes. These barriers often make it difficult to achieve complete zero waste in real-life scenarios.
KEYWORDS
Zero-waste interior design is a sustainable approach that helps in reducing waste and protecting the environment. Although achieving complete zero waste is difficult, significant reduction is possible through the use of eco-friendly materials, reuse, and proper design strategies. With better awareness and planning, zero-waste interiors can become a practical and future-oriented solution. In conclusion, zero-waste interior design should not be seen as a myth, but as a realistic and achievable goal for the future. While complete zero waste may be difficult to attain, moving towards low-waste and sustainable interiors is both possible and necessary. By making conscious and responsible design choices, it is possible to create interior spaces that are not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally responsible and future-ready. The concept of zero-waste interiors helps in minimizing environmental damage. By using reuse, recycling, and smart planning, waste can be controlled. It is a practical approach for modern design. The concept of zero-waste interiors promotes responsible use of materials. Although complete zero waste is difficult, reduction is possible. It supports sustainable and eco-friendly living. This study proves that zero-waste interiors are achievable with thoughtful design. It reduces waste and improves resource efficiency. It is a necessary approach for modern interiors. The study highlights that zero-waste interiors reduce waste and promote eco-friendly practices. Though not fully achievable, it is a realistic goal. It plays an important role in sustainability.
