Eco-tourism has emerged as an important tool for sustainable development by promoting environmental conservation, local participation, and employment generation. Kerala possesses significant eco-tourism potential due to its rich biodiversity and natural attractions. The present study examines the development and employment opportunities created through eco-tourism with special reference to Adyanpara Waterfalls in Nilambur Taluk, Kerala. The study is based on both primary and secondary data collected from local residents, tourists, journals, books, and government reports. The findings reveal that eco-tourism has contributed to rural development by generating employment, improving income levels, encouraging entrepreneurship, and developing infrastructure. However, issues such as environmental degradation, waste management, and inadequate facilities remain major challenges. The study concludes that sustainable planning, environmental awareness, and community participation are essential for the long-term success of eco-tourism.
KEYWORDS
Eco-tourism has become an effective strategy for promoting sustainable development and employment generation. The study reveals that eco-tourism activities at Adyanpara Waterfalls have improved rural livelihoods, generated income, and supported local economic development. However, increasing tourist activities have also created environmental and infrastructural challenges. Therefore, proper planning, environmental protection measures, and active community participation are necessary for ensuring sustainable eco-tourism development. Eco-tourism can play a vital role in balancing economic progress with environmental conservation and preserving the natural heritage of destinations like Adyanpara Waterfalls.
