This research explores the development of a sustainable 3D luxury garment inspired by the morphological structure of the orchid flower.Orchids are noted for their complex and specialised floral structures, which can be translated into sculptural silhouettes, layered surfaces and three-dimensional garment details. The proposed garment will incorporate biomimicry, sustainable textiles, natural colour extraction and digital/3D garment development. The concept aims to display how a luxury garment can achieve a visually rich appearance while reducing material waste through controlled construction, modular components and a digital fabrication approach.
KEYWORDS
The study demonstrates how the morphological structure of the orchid flower can provide a strong foundation for sustainable luxury garment development. Its petals, sepals, labellum, central column and pollinia present numerous opportunities for creating three-dimensional silhouettes and surface structures.Through the approach of biomimicry, sustainable textiles, natural colour experimentation, CAD modelling and selective 3D fabrication, the orchid can be transformed from a natural source of inspiration into an innovative fashion system. However, 3D printing should not automatically be considered sustainable.Current research identifies various challenges including energy consumption, material recyclability, comfort, scalability and end-of-life management. Therefore, the proposed luxury garment should combine digital technology along with sustainable material selection, low-waste construction, modularity and long product life. The resulting garment can illustrate how sustainability and luxury do not necessarily have to contrast each other: nature-inspired design and advanced technology along with responsible material choices can be used to achieve an innovative 3D couture garment.
