The rapid expansion of social media platforms has revolutionized digital advertising by enabling highly targeted and cost-effective communication. However, this growth has also created new avenues for cybercrime. Fraudsters increasingly exploit social media advertisements to deceive users through phishing, fake e-commerce platforms, financial scams, and identity theft schemes. This study, based on secondary data, critically examines the role of social media advertisements in facilitating cybercrime. It provides a detailed classification of ad-based cybercrimes and analyzes the technological, behavioral and institutional factors that contribute to their proliferation. The study concludes that while social media advertising enhances business efficiency, it simultaneously increases user vulnerability due to algorithmic targeting, low digital literacy, and regulatory gaps.
KEYWORDS
Social media advertisements have emerged as a significant facilitator of cybercrime due to their reach, targeting precision, and persuasive nature. Addressing this issue requires a multi-stakeholder approach involving governments, platforms, and users. Strengthening awareness, regulation, and technological safeguards is essential to mitigate risks and ensure a secure digital environment.
