The rapid expansion of e-commerce has fundamentally transformed the way consumers search for information, evaluate alternatives, purchase products and services, and interact with businesses. The increasing availability of smartphones, digital payment systems, social media, artificial intelligence, data analytics, mobile applications, and online marketplaces has created a dynamic digital marketplace in which consumer buying behaviour is continuously evolving. Consumers can compare prices, read reviews, access personalized recommendations, communicate with sellers, and complete transactions from virtually any location. At the same time, the digital marketplace has introduced new challenges involving privacy, cybersecurity, information overload, deceptive practices, counterfeit products, delivery concerns, return policies, and consumer trust. This article examines the relationship between e-commerce and consumer buying behaviour, with particular emphasis on emerging trends and challenges in the digital marketplace. The study adopts a conceptual and descriptive research approach based on secondary sources, including academic literature, books, institutional publications, and industry reports. The article analyzes major factors influencing online purchasing decisions, including convenience, price, perceived value, trust, website quality, electronic word-of-mouth, personalization, social commerce, digital payments, artificial intelligence, and mobile commerce. The study also discusses emerging trends such as social commerce, omnichannel retailing, personalized recommendations, live commerce, mobile-first shopping, quick commerce, subscription commerce, and AI-enabled customer experiences. The analysis indicates that technological advancement has increased consumer choice and convenience while simultaneously making trust, transparency, privacy, and service quality increasingly important determinants of online purchasing behaviour. The article concludes that businesses seeking sustainable growth in the digital marketplace must adopt customer-centric strategies, strengthen trust and cybersecurity, provide transparent information, personalize experiences responsibly, and integrate physical and digital channels effectively.
KEYWORDS
E-commerce has fundamentally transformed consumer buying behaviour by changing how consumers discover products, obtain information, compare alternatives, make purchases, and evaluate their experiences. Convenience, price transparency, product variety, customer reviews, digital payments, personalization, social media, and mobile commerce have increased the attractiveness of online shopping. Technological developments such as Artificial Intelligence, data analytics, conversational systems, and omnichannel platforms are further transforming the consumer journey. However, the digital marketplace also creates significant challenges. Cybersecurity threats, data privacy concerns, fake reviews, counterfeit products, information overload, misleading digital practices, delivery problems, and uncertain product quality can reduce consumer trust. The analysis demonstrates that consumer trust and customer experience are increasingly central to the success of e-commerce. Businesses cannot rely exclusively on discounts or technological innovation. They must also provide accurate information, secure transactions, transparent policies, reliable delivery, effective customer service, and responsible data practices. The future of e-commerce will therefore depend on the ability of businesses to combine technological innovation with consumer-centric management. Organizations that successfully integrate AI, mobile commerce, social commerce, digital payments, personalization, and omnichannel services while maintaining privacy, security, transparency, and ethical standards will be better positioned to build long-term consumer loyalty and sustainable competitive advantage. Ultimately, the evolution of digital commerce is not merely a technological transformation; it is a transformation in the relationship between businesses and consumers. The most successful digital marketplaces will be those that use technology to create greater convenience, trust, value, transparency, and meaningful customer experiences.
