Abstract

The implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India on July 1, 2017, marked a significant milestone in the country's indirect taxation system. GST replaced multiple indirect taxes levied by the Central and State Governments with a unified tax structure, thereby simplifying tax administration and promoting economic integration. Despite its numerous advantages, GST implementation posed considerable challenges for businesses, government agencies, and taxpayers. The transition required substantial changes in accounting systems, business processes, supply chain management, and technological infrastructure. This paper examines the best practices in GST implementation and evaluates their role in improving compliance, operational efficiency, and organizational performance. The study reviews existing literature, analyzes implementation challenges, and identifies strategic measures adopted by successful organizations. The findings indicate that technology adoption, employee training, robust compliance mechanisms, effective vendor management, and continuous monitoring of regulatory changes significantly contribute to successful GST implementation. The paper concludes with recommendations for businesses and policymakers to enhance GST compliance and maximize its benefits.

Full Article/Conclusion

The Goods and Services Tax has fundamentally transformed India's indirect taxation landscape by creating a unified and transparent tax system. Although the transition presented several challenges, GST has generated significant benefits in terms of tax efficiency, supply chain optimization, compliance transparency, and economic integration. The study demonstrates that successful GST implementation depends on adopting best practices such as technological modernization, employee training, vendor management, documentation control, reconciliation procedures, and continuous regulatory monitoring. Organizations that embrace these practices are more likely to achieve compliance excellence, operational efficiency, and sustainable growth. As GST continues to evolve, businesses must remain adaptable and proactive in responding to regulatory developments. Effective implementation should therefore be viewed as a strategic initiative that contributes not only to compliance but also to long-term organizational competitiveness.
