Urban parking congestion is a growing challenge in modern cities. This paper presents the complete embedded-system design and firmware implementation of ParkFlow, an intelligent smart parking platform built around the ESP8266 NodeMCU microcontroller. The architecture addresses four interconnected engineering problems: multi-sensor GPIO management, cooperative multitasking within a single-threaded environment, reliable occupancy detection under noisy acoustic conditions, and efficient wireless data transmission to a cloud backend. The occupancy-detection algorithm employs an adaptive-hysteresis majority-vote filter with a sliding window of size W = 5, which reduces false detections by 61% compared to a simple threshold comparator. HTTP keep-alive session reuse reduces per-update transmission latency by 34%. Static memory allocation prevents heap fragmentation; the minimum free heap stabilizes at 28.4 KB after 24 hours of continuous operation. A context-aware I2C LCD display state machine conveys five distinct operational states to maintenance personnel without requiring any external diagnostic tools. These design patterns are broadly applicable to ESP8266-based IoT sensor nodes beyond smart parking, including environmental monitoring, asset tracking, and industrial automation.

This paper presented a comprehensive embedded firmware design for the ParkFlow smart parking platform, built on the ESP8266 NodeMCU microcontroller. The work addressed four interconnected engineering challenges that are representative of the broader class of IoT sensor node firmware: cooperative multitasking within a single-threaded environment, robust occupancy detection under noisy acoustic conditions, efficient wireless data transmission, and context-aware user interface design. The cooperative multitasking architecture enables concurrent sensor polling, HTTP transmission, and LCD refresh without blocking delays, achieving stable 72-hour continuous operation with no watchdog resets and a minimum free heap of 28.4 KB. The adaptive-hysteresis majority-vote occupancy detection algorithm achieved 97.4% overall detection accuracy and reduced false detections by 61% compared to a simple threshold comparator. HTTP keep-alive session reuse reduced per-update transmission latency by 34% and transmission latency variability by 61%. The context-aware LCD state machine successfully communicated all five operational states to both end users and maintenance personnel in usability testing. Beyond the specific domain of smart parking, the design patterns presented in this work are directly applicable to any ESP8266-based IoT sensor node that combines periodic sensing, local display output, and regular network reporting. The principles of cooperative multitasking, adaptive filtering, static memory allocation, and context-aware user feedback are broadly transferable and address challenges that arise in environmental monitoring, industrial condition sensing, asset tracking, and smart building automation. Future work will focus on four areas. First, migration to the ESP32 platform will leverage dual-core processing and increased RAM to support more sensors per node and more sophisticated edge computing capabilities. Second, replacing HTTP with MQTT will enable bidirectional server-to-node communication, supporting remote configuration updates and real-time threshold adjustment without firmware re-flashing. Third, integration of machine learning-based occupancy prediction using historical patterns will allow the system to forecast parking availability and provide proactive guidance to drivers before they reach the facility. Fourth, investigation of energy-harvesting power architectures, including solar panel integration with deep-sleep scheduling, will enable deployment of sensor nodes in locations without convenient access to electrical infrastructure.
