The English language is highly prominent and significant in the present era. It serves as a global language that connects people across the world. In modern India, the advantages of learning English are numerous. The power and influence of a language grow with its use as a medium of administration, education, trade, and international relations, and English fulfills all these roles effectively. Over the years, the preference for English education has increased due to the wide range of opportunities it offers within the country. English enjoys a privileged position in India and holds strong appeal as an aspirational language in a multilingual society. This paper explores the significance of the English language and examines its utility in everyday modern life.
KEYWORDS
States with diverse cultures, regional languages, and social attitudes are increasingly connecting through the English language. A common medium of expression and communication enables people from different regions and backgrounds to collaborate, share ideas, and exchange information. Nagaland, for example, is a state where English language and culture are predominant. Major boarding schools and prominent public schools across India provide a fully English-oriented environment. Additionally, many Indian scholars travel to English-speaking countries for academic, professional, or business purposes, further highlighting the global relevance of the language. The medium of instruction in Indian higher education has gradually shifted from local dialects to English. Initially, English was recognized primarily as a language of trade and commerce at the beginning of globalization. This shift can be seen as the start of a new form of globalization, expressed through linguistic influence. Therefore, the use of English alongside Hindi and other regional languages is highly significant. It should be studied as an important foreign language and serve as the medium of instruction in subjects like science and technology at higher levels. At the same time, regional languages, which are valuable cultural treasures, must not be ignored or neglected.
