Environmental sustainability has emerged as a critical policy priority for governments worldwide due to increasing concerns regarding climate change, resource depletion, environmental degradation, and carbon emissions. Taxation policies are increasingly being utilized as strategic instruments to encourage environmentally responsible behavior among businesses and consumers. In India, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework provides significant opportunities to promote sustainability through differentiated tax rates, incentives for eco-friendly products, support for renewable energy technologies, and encouragement of sustainable production and consumption practices. GST incentives can influence market behavior by reducing the cost of green products and promoting investments in environmentally sustainable technologies. However, challenges related to policy design, implementation effectiveness, industry readiness, and stakeholder awareness continue to affect the realization of sustainability objectives. This paper examines the role of GST incentives in promoting environmental sustainability, evaluates emerging policy perspectives, identifies implementation challenges, and proposes recommendations for strengthening green taxation strategies within the GST framework.
KEYWORDS
Environmental sustainability has become an essential component of modern economic policy, and taxation systems can play a significant role in supporting sustainable development objectives. GST provides a valuable platform for promoting environmentally responsible behavior through targeted incentives, reduced tax rates, and support for green technologies. The study demonstrates that GST incentives can encourage renewable energy adoption, sustainable consumption, resource efficiency, and green innovation. However, challenges related to policy design, implementation complexity, awareness, and monitoring must be addressed to maximize effectiveness. As environmental concerns continue to grow globally, integrating sustainability considerations into GST policy will become increasingly important. A well-designed green GST framework can contribute to climate action, economic development, and long-term environmental protection while supporting India's transition toward a sustainable and resilient economy.
