Personalized recommendation systems have become an integral component of modern digital ecosystems, particularly in e-commerce platforms where user engagement and satisfaction are directly linked to the relevance of suggested items. Among various recommendation domains, gift recommendation poses unique challenges due to its inherently subjective, context-dependent, and socially influenced nature. Unlike conventional product recommendations that rely primarily on a user’s past behavior, gift recommendation requires understanding the preferences of a third party (the recipient), contextual information such as the occasion, and emotional or cultural considerations. Traditional recommender systems, including collaborative filtering, content-based filtering, and hybrid approaches, have demonstrated effectiveness in structured environments but fall short in capturing nuanced human intent and contextual subtleties. These systems often struggle with cold-start problems, sparse data, and lack of interpretability. In contrast, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) introduces a paradigm shift by enabling systems to generate recommendations dynamically through semantic understanding, contextual reasoning, and natural language interaction. This paper explores the application of generative AI, particularly large language models (LLMs) and multimodal generative systems, in personalized gift recommendation. It presents a comprehensive system architecture, discusses methodologies for integrating structured and unstructured data, and evaluates performance improvements over traditional approaches. Furthermore, it analyzes challenges such as hallucination, bias, computational cost, and privacy concerns. The findings suggest that generative AI significantly enhances recommendation quality by providing context-aware, explainable, and human-like suggestions. The study concludes by outlining future research directions, including emotion-aware systems, multimodal integration, and ethical AI frameworks.
KEYWORDS
Generative AI represents a significant advancement in personalized gift recommendation systems. By enabling context-aware, explainable, and interactive recommendations, it addresses many limitations of traditional approaches. However, further research is needed to overcome challenges related to ethics, scalability, and reliability.
