Abstract

The Head Rest Air Bag System is an advanced smart safety solution aimed at enhancing passenger protection during road accidents by integrating Internet of Things (IoT) technology with intelligent automation. The primary objective of this project is to design and implement a responsive airbag mechanism embedded within the headrest that can detect potential accidents and deploy safety measures in real time. The system is developed using the ESP32 microcontroller as the central processing unit, responsible for processing sensor data, executing control algorithms, and enabling wireless communication. It is also compatible with the ESP8266 module, allowing flexible operation and remote access through IoT platforms. The system utilizes multiple sensors, including accelerometers and vibration sensors, to continuously monitor parameters such as acceleration, motion, and orientation. When abnormal conditions exceeding a predefined threshold are detected, the system triggers immediate deployment of the headrest airbag. This rapid response helps reduce the impact on the head and neck, minimizing injuries, particularly in rear-end collisions where such trauma is most common. The deployment occurs within milliseconds, ensuring timely protection and improved passenger safety. A key feature of the system is its integration with the ESP RainMaker IoT platform, which enables seamless communication between the hardware and user interfaces such as mobile applications. In the event of an accident, the system automatically sends alert notifications to predefined contacts, facilitating faster emergency response. Additionally, the prototype includes a mobility mechanism controlled via ESP8266, demonstrating real-time wireless control capabilities. Overall, the system offers a cost-effective, scalable, and efficient approach to automotive safety, combining real-time detection, automated response, and remote monitoring, while also providing scope for future enhancements such as GPS integration and AI-based prediction systems.
