This paper presents the evolution of English studies and its new purpose in a world that has been dramatically impacted by innovations in technology, improved means of global communication and collaborative approaches across multiple disciplines (interdisciplinary). Therefore; the role of English studies in society today, is much more than just teaching the “grammar, literature and language”, but a “dynamic” discipline of humanities that develops and enhances one’s capacity for critical thinking, developing ethical awareness, developing communication competence, developing cultural literacy, and developing interpretive intelligence. In an age where artificial intelligence; digital communication has become the primary means by which we communicate; and global networks are part of our daily life; English studies enable learners to develop a deeper understanding of texts, contexts, identities, and ideologies. This paper will discuss the theoretical underpinnings of English studies, the historical development of English studies, and the current relevance of English studies in both the academic environment and society today. This paper will also explain how English studies works practically using interpretation; effective communication; a cultural analysis of the world around us; and the use of reflective learning in English studies. Lastly, the paper will address some of the major challenges faced by English studies in the present day; such as; digital distractions, decreased reading engagement, utilitarian attitudes toward education; and the current focus on demonstrating learning only through a technically measured outcome.

Humanity's have to change if they wish to stay current during the age of change. The English Language and Literature Field is proof of how an old subject can be relevant in today's world. This discipline has the power to transform society through its connections between language/thought; literature/life; and criticism/culture. At a time when every part of our society is changing because of machines, these subjects provide a different type of insight than what we gain through use of machines; they provide an interpretative depth, ethical consideration, emotional awareness and the capacity to understand the complexity in people. English Language and Literature disciplines will always be important because they teach individuals how to interpret their environment. Students will learn to look past the surface of things (the surface information) and develop the skills of inquiry, empathy, and expression that are essential for being responsible citizens. Consequently, English Language and Literature is not a remnant from the past, but instead is a vibrant and growing academic discipline that continues to adapt to the changing realities of our times while maintaining focus on the timeless issues affecting humanity. Furthermore, its adaptability is another reason for its importance. By exploring digital humanities, media studies, global literatures, and interdisciplinary studies, English studies illustrate that the humanities can innovate without losing their identity; thus, this adaptability makes it particularly strong in today’s educational environment and prepares students to be able to apply themselves socially; to use ethical reasoning; and to creatively solve problems through the use of innovation and technology. Thus, the importance of English studies is that it continues to put "human" back into humanities, and to remind us that any innovation must be a means for understanding, and that any progress made by humanity can be considered true progress as long as it continues to enhance humanity's capacity for both thought/language/sharing
