Railway transportation systems require continuous condition monitoring to ensure operational safety, reliability, and cost-effective maintenance. Traditional monitoring systems rely on centralized cloud architectures that often suffer from latency, bandwidth constraints, and limited scalability when processing large volumes of sensor data. Recent advances in Edge Artificial Intelligence (Edge AI) and Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) provide an opportunity to develop intelligent, decentralized monitoring frameworks capable of real-time decision-making. This paper proposes a Hybrid Edge AI and Graph Neural Network Framework (HEA-GNN) for intelligent railway condition monitoring. The framework integrates distributed Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, edge computing devices, graph-based infrastructure modeling, and deep learning algorithms to detect anomalies and predict failures in railway assets. Railway components such as tracks, switches, signaling systems, bridges, and tunnels are represented as graph nodes, while physical and operational relationships are represented as graph edges. Experimental evaluation on a simulated railway infrastructure network demonstrates that the proposed framework achieves 98.1% classification accuracy, 97.8% precision, 98.3% recall, and a 0.991 ROC-AUC score while reducing inference latency by over 90% compared to cloud-based monitoring approaches. The results highlight the potential of combining Edge AI and graph learning for next-generation Railway 4.0 applications.
KEYWORDS
This research presented a Hybrid Edge AI and Graph Neural Network Framework for intelligent railway condition monitoring. The proposed architecture integrates IoT sensing, edge computing, and graph-based deep learning to provide accurate, scalable, and real-time monitoring of railway infrastructure. Experimental results demonstrated superior predictive performance compared to conventional machine learning and deep learning approaches. The framework offers a practical solution for next-generation railway asset management systems by enabling early fault detection, reducing maintenance costs, and improving operational safety. Future research will focus on integrating digital twin technology, federated learning, explainable AI mechanisms, and large-scale deployment across national railway networks.
