Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (HRES) integrate two or more energy sources typically renewable such as solar, wind, hydro, and biomass, and sometimes conventional sources like diesel generators or grid supply—to deliver reliable, efficient, and sustainable electricity. The intermittency of individual renewable sources limits their standalone performance; hybridization mitigates this issue by combining complementary generation patterns and energy storage technologies. This paper discusses the concept, necessity, classification, comparison with standalone renewable systems, applications, environmental and socio-economic impacts, challenges, and future directions of hybrid systems. A case study of Indian hybrid renewable projects is also presented. The study concludes that hybrid energy systems significantly enhance reliability, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen energy security, making them essential for future sustainable power infrastructure.
