Abstract

The pharmaceutical industry plays a vital role in ensuring public health and product safety. In recent years, product recalls have become a major operational challenge for pharmaceutical organizations due to increasing regulatory requirements, quality concerns, and growing supply chain complexity. Product recall situations can significantly affect operational continuity, inventory management, logistics coordination, customer satisfaction, and overall supply chain performance. Therefore, effective product recall management has become essential for maintaining operational efficiency and organizational reputation within the pharmaceutical industry. The present study focuses on analysing the impact of product recall management on supply chain performance in the pharmaceutical industry. The study aims to examine how product recall activities influence supply chain disruption, operational efficiency, logistics coordination, customer satisfaction, and Triple Bottom Line dimensions including economic, social, and environmental impact. Primary data for the study was collected through structured questionnaires distributed among respondents involved in warehouse operations, logistics management, procurement, inventory control, quality control, and 3PL-related activities. Secondary data was collected from books, journals, research articles, reports, and online sources related to pharmaceutical supply chains and product recall management. The collected data was analysed using descriptive analysis, graphical analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The findings of the study indicate that product recalls create significant operational disruptions within pharmaceutical supply chains. The analysis also reveals that product recalls negatively affect inventory management, transportation activities, delivery performance, and customer trust. The study further highlights that effective communication systems, traceability mechanisms, coordination practices, and sustainable operational strategies help organizations improve recall management efficiency and maintain supply chain continuity. The study concludes that effective product recall management practices positively contribute towards supply chain performance and organizational sustainability within the pharmaceutical industry.

Full Article/Conclusion

The present study was conducted to analyse the impact of product recall management on supply chain performance in the pharmaceutical industry. The research mainly focused on understanding how product recall situations influence operational efficiency, logistics coordination, inventory management, customer satisfaction, and overall supply chain continuity. The findings of the study indicate that product recalls create significant operational disruptions within pharmaceutical supply chains. The analysis also revealed that ineffective recall management negatively affects inventory control, transportation activities, warehouse operations, and delivery performance. Product recall situations further increase operational complexity and coordination challenges among supply chain partners. The study highlights that effective communication systems, product traceability mechanisms, and proper coordination practices play an important role in improving product recall management efficiency. Organizations with better recall management practices are able to reduce operational disruptions and maintain supply chain continuity more effectively. The research also identified that product recalls affect the Triple Bottom Line dimensions of organizations, including economic, social, and environmental aspects. Product recall situations increase operational and logistics costs, influence customer trust and organizational reputation, and create waste generation and disposal challenges. The correlation and regression analysis conducted during the study indicate a positive relationship between product recall management and supply chain performance. The findings suggest that effective product recall management practices significantly contribute towards operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, and sustainable supply chain operations in the pharmaceutical industry.
