The rapid advancement of the Internet of Things (IoT) has significantly transformed the concept of urban development, leading to the emergence of smart cities. IoT enables the integration of interconnected devices, sensors, and communication technologies to col- lect and analyze real-time data, thereby improving the efficiency of urban services and enhancing the quality of life for citizens. This paper explores the role of IoT in various smart city applications, including intelligent transportation systems, smart energy manage- ment, waste management, and public safety. Furthermore, it discusses the key challenges associated with IoT deployment, such as data security, privacy concerns, scalability, and infrastructure limitations. The study also highlights emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, 5G networks, and edge computing that further strengthen IoT capabilities in smart environments. Finally, the paper provides insights into future trends and the potential of IoT in building sustainable, efficient, and resilient smart cities.
