Abstract

The principle "It is more blessed to give than to receive" finds profound expression in the life and work of Acharya Vinoba Bhave, the pioneer of the Bhoodan (Land-Gift) Movement in India. This paper examines the philosophical significance of giving as portrayed in Hallam Tennyson's essay Acharya Vinoba Bhave and relates it to major Indian philosophical concepts such as Dāna (charity), Tyāga (renunciation), Sarvodaya (universal welfare), and Nishkama Karma (selfless action). The study argues that Vinoba transformed the act of giving from a material transaction into a moral and spiritual awakening. His approach demonstrates how ancient Indian wisdom can address modern social inequalities through voluntary generosity and inner transformation.
