Abstract

This research explores the sustainable transformation of post-harvest lotus stem waste (Nelumbo nucifera) into high-value, biodegradable luxury textiles. By extracting fine microscopic cellulose filaments from discarded petioles through manual and semi-mechanical processing, the study presents an eco-friendly alternative to resource-intensive silks and synthetic polyesters. The resulting lotus-derived fabric exhibits high breathability, natural moisture-wicking, wrinkle resistance, and antibacterial properties without requiring harmful chemical treatments. Operating on circular economy principles, this zero-waste extraction process converts agricultural residue into a premium, 100% compostable bio-textile, offering a sustainable solution for luxury fashion while supporting rural socio-economic growth

Full Article/Conclusion

This research demonstrates that upcycling post-harvest lotus stem waste (Nelumbo nucifera) into biodegradable luxury textiles is a viable, high-impact solution for modern sustainable fashion. By leveraging circular economy principles, the zero-waste extraction process converts aquatic agricultural residue into a premium, high-performance bio-fabric with inherent breathability, natural drape, and moisture-wicking properties. As illustrated in the couture design concept, lotus fiber offers the structural versatility required for both rigid, architectural bodices and fluid, delicate lace detailing without relying on synthetic petroleum-based materials.
