Cybersecurity has become a critical domain in the modern digital era, requiring robust and scientifically grounded approaches to protect information systems. Mathematical techniques provide the foundation for designing secure communication protocols, detecting anomalies, and modelling cyber threats. This paper explores key mathematical approaches used in cybersecurity, including cryptography, probability theory, graph theory, game theory, and stochastic processes. It also examines the integration of machine learning and optimization methods for advanced threat detection. Furthermore, the study presents practical implementations through network models, Markov processes, and real-world case analysis of cyberattacks. The findings demonstrate that mathematical models significantly enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and predictive capabilities of cybersecurity systems. Emerging trends such as quantum cryptography and graph neural networks are also discussed, highlighting future research directions in the field.
KEYWORDS
This paper presented a comprehensive study of mathematical approaches in cybersecurity, highlighting their critical role in securing modern digital systems. Various mathematical techniques, including cryptography, probability theory, graph theory, Markov models, and epidemic modelling, were explored and analysed in the context of cyber threat detection and prevention. The results obtained from simulations demonstrate that mathematical models significantly enhance the effectiveness of cybersecurity systems. Cryptographic methods ensure secure communication and data protection, while probabilistic and statistical models enable accurate anomaly detection. Graph-based approaches provide valuable insights into network structure and attack propagation, and stochastic models such as Markov chains help predict system behaviour under different threat scenarios. Furthermore, the integration of these mathematical techniques with computational tools such as Python and MATLAB enables practical implementation and real-time analysis. The study also showed that no single approach is sufficient to address all cybersecurity challenges. Instead, a hybrid approach combining multiple mathematical models offers improved accuracy, scalability, and adaptability. Overall, the findings confirm that mathematics forms the backbone of modern cybersecurity, transforming it into a predictive and analytical discipline capable of addressing complex and evolving threats.
