The National Education Policy 2020 introduced a transformative reform in higher education through the Multiple Entry and Exit System (MEES), aiming to enhance flexibility, accessibility, and learner autonomy. This system allows students to enter and exit undergraduate programs at various stages without losing the credits they have earned. Depending on the duration of study, learners may receive a certificate after one year, a diploma after two years, a bachelor’s degree after three years, and a bachelor’s degree with research after four years. The reform is supported by the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC), which digitally stores academic credits and facilitates seamless credit transfer across recognized institutions. The Multiple Entry and Exit System addresses long-standing challenges such as high dropout rates, rigid program structures, and limited academic mobility. By enabling students to pause and resume their studies according to personal, financial, or professional circumstances, the policy promotes inclusivity and lifelong learning. It also encourages interdisciplinary education and skill-based learning, aligning academic programs with industry needs and global standards. Furthermore, the system enhances employability by recognizing partial academic achievements and providing formal qualifications at each stage. This learner-centric approach reflects a paradigm shift from a rigid, time-bound education model to a flexible and competency-based framework. Overall, the Multiple Entry and Exit System under NEP 2020 represents a progressive step toward democratizing higher education and making it more adaptable to the diverse needs of students in the 21st century.
