Traditional Indian attire represents a rich combination of art, culture, craftsmanship, and regional identity. Among its most important visual characteristics are pattern and rhythm, which create balance, movement, repetition, and harmony in clothing. Patterns appear through motifs, embroidery, weaving, printing, borders, and surface ornamentation, while rhythm is created through the systematic repetition and arrangement of these elements. This paper descriptively examines pattern and rhythm in traditional Indian garments such as sarees, lehengas, salwar-kameez, and regional costumes. It explores how motifs, colours, lines, borders, and textile techniques contribute to aesthetic expression and cultural identity. The study also highlights the role of traditional crafts such as block printing, handloom weaving, embroidery, Bandhani, Kalamkari, and Maheshwari weaving in maintaining India's textile heritage.
KEYWORDS
Pattern and rhythm are essential components of traditional Indian attire. Through repetition, symmetry, progression, colour, borders, motifs, weaving, printing, and embroidery, Indian garments achieve visual harmony and cultural expression. From the saree to regional costumes, these design principles demonstrate the artistic knowledge of Indian textile communities. Understanding pattern and rhythm is therefore valuable not only for appreciating traditional clothing but also for developing contemporary fashion inspired by Indian heritage. The continued study and creative adaptation of these elements can contribute to the preservation and evolution of India's rich textile traditions.
