PaySure — Smart UPI Payment with Real-Time Fraud Detection is a full-stack web application designed to address the growing threat of financial fraud within India's Unified Payments Interface ecosystem. As UPI has expanded to process billions of transactions every month, the speed and openness that define the platform have simultaneously made it a high-value target for fraud attacks. Existing prevention mechanisms — static rule engines and post-transaction review systems — prove structurally inadequate in this context: rule engines are circumvented by fraudsters who adapt to their fixed conditions, and post-transaction detection arrives only after the money has already left the victim's account. PaySure closes these gaps by embedding an intelligent fraud evaluation engine directly into the transaction initiation flow, ensuring that every payment is assessed before any funds are transferred. The system combines a deterministic rule-based scoring engine with a CatBoost gradient boosting classifier trained on real UPI transaction data, fusing their output into a unified risk score that produces one of four outcomes — GREEN, YELLOW, RED, or BLOCKED — while a receiver UPI fraud database provides a deterministic override that guarantees confirmed fraudulent accounts are always refused. The platform serves three user roles — regular account holders, merchants, and administrators — each with dedicated workflows and role-enforced access controls. Merchants receive a dynamically generated UPI QR code and a received-payments log; administrators have full audit visibility across all users and transactions. SHAP — SHapley Additive explanations — is integrated into the detection pipeline to surface the specific features driving every fraud decision in human-readable language, making outcomes transparent and auditable. An IMEI-based device registry automatically blacklists devices associated with repeated fraudulent activity. The system achieves a classification accuracy of 97% and an AUC of 0.9967, and is deployed to Render.com with a PostgreSQL backend and environment-configurable fraud thresholds.
KEYWORDS
The PaySure project provides a comprehensive solution for real-time fraud detection in UPI-based digital transactions. By employing advanced machine learning techniques, particularly a highly optimized CatBoost gradient boosting classifier, the system can effectively identify anomalous and potentially fraudulent activities with high accuracy. The integration of real-time monitoring ensures that users are promptly alerted to suspicious transactions, thereby reducing financial risk and improving overall trust in digital payment systems. The adoption of the Agile development methodology allowed for iterative improvements, quick feedback incorporation, and progressive enhancement of both the ML models and the system’s user interface. This approach ensured that the system could adapt to changing fraud patterns and evolving user requirements. Moreover, the use of CRISP-DM for structured data mining and model development ensured that the solution was data-driven, reliable, and scalable. In summary, PaySure not only strengthens the security infrastructure of UPI payment systems but also serves as a flexible and extensible framework that can be applied to other digital payment platforms. The project highlights the importance of combining AI techniques with best software development practices to achieve effective, real-time fraud detection.
