Abstract

In the modern era, companies want to offer personalised products and services to their customers by mining big volumes of data. Individualization — driven by data and artificial intelligence (AI) — has also helped to drive customer loyalty and conversion. But that’s also where the rise in use of consumer data poses serious privacy issues as users become more aware of how their data is used and collected. This article explores the balancing act of personalization with privacy, how companies can provide personalized services without jeopardizing customers’ trust. It discusses the ethical, legal and practical issues around data collection and makes recommendations to organisations on how to ensure consumers’ privacy without compromising personalization.

Full Article/Conclusion

How companies are able to balance personalization with privacy is a big question for businesses of the digital age. Personalization can help customer experience and businesses but it should be done in a privacy-sensitive, trust-building way. Businesses need to be open and ethical with their data and give consumers ownership of their data. They will in doing so be adding value for the consumer as well as the company and help create long-term loyalty and trust in a privacy-shy marketplace.
