Quantum networking constitutes a paradigm shift in secure data transmission and distributed computing. Unlike classical networks, which encode information as binary bits, quantum networks exploit the properties of qubits — governed by superposition, entanglement, and quantum teleportation — to achieve communication that is both efficient and fundamentally secure. Protocols such as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) provide information-theoretic security guarantees, ensuring that any interception attempt is detectable. Advances in quantum repeaters, quantum memory, and photonic integration have materially improved the prospects for building large-scale quantum networks capable of interconnecting quantum processors and realizing a global quantum internet. Nevertheless, critical barriers persist: decoherence, photon loss over extended distances, and the engineering demands of maintaining coherent quantum states at scale. This research systematically examines quantum network architectures, underlying operating principles, and the trajectory of recent technological development, while providing a rigorous analysis of current limitations and future research priorities. The findings underscore the transformative implications of quantum communication for cyber security, high-performance scientific computing, and the communications infrastructure of the future.
KEYWORDS
Quantum networking and computing systems represent a major breakthrough in modern information technology. By using quantum mechanical principles like superposition and entanglement, these technologies offer unprecedented computational abilities and highly secure communication systems. Although quantum technologies are still in the early stages of development, ongoing research and technological progress are expected to overcome current limitations. The successful implementation of quantum networks and scalable quantum computers will change fields like cyber security, artificial intelligence, healthcare, and financial modelling.
