Abstract

Railway safety requires continuous monitoring of tracks, platforms, and train compartments to reduce accidents caused by track defects, obstacles, fire, and improper platform management. This paper presents an IoT-based Railway Management System designed to provide automated monitoring and rapid response to hazardous railway conditions. The proposed system employs an Arduino Uno as the main controller along with IR sensors, ultrasonic sensors, a fire sensor, NodeMCU, ZigBee communication, LCD display, relays, DC motors, and a water-sprinkling mechanism. IR and ultrasonic sensors are employed for track and obstacle monitoring, while IR sensors at the station are used to determine platform availability. A fire sensor continuously monitors fire conditions and initiates safety actions such as water sprinkling and compartment/engine detachment when a fire is detected. The IoT communication facility enables detected events to be transmitted to a mobile application over Wi-Fi, providing real-time information regarding railway conditions. Experimental implementation demonstrates the detection of right-side and left-side track cracks and fire conditions, with corresponding warning messages transmitted to the mobile application. The developed system therefore combines track monitoring, platform availability detection, fire protection, and wireless communication in an integrated railway safety framework.

Full Article/Conclusion

An IoT-based Railway Management System has been developed to improve railway safety through automated monitoring and communication. The system integrates IR and ultrasonic sensors for track and obstacle monitoring, fire sensing for emergency detection, platform availability monitoring, Arduino-based control, and IoT communication. Automatic monitoring can reduce the risk associated with railway-track cracks and fire incidents while reducing the requirement for manual track inspection. The implemented prototype demonstrates track-crack detection, fire detection, platform monitoring, and transmission of warning information through wireless communication. Future development can incorporate predictive maintenance, 5G-based communication, additional environmental sensors, smart-city integration, and large-scale implementation in railway and metro networks.
